Who should I take to buy a wedding dress?

I recommend taking 2-4 close family members and friends with you when wedding dress shopping.  If you take a larger group, you will likely be overwhelmed with all of the opinions and comments coming your way.  Remember that while you don’t want to offend anyone by ignoring their opinion, the only opinion that really matters when dress shopping is yours.  Make sure you purchase a dress that you love and feel comfortable in.  I do recommend including the person who will pay for the dress if it won’t be you and prioritizing their opinions.  Wedding dress shopping should be a fun experience.  Don’t be afraid to ask your entourage to tone down their comments if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

What is the etiquette on taking the groom to buy the dress?

Traditionally the groom is not allowed to see the wedding dress until the bride walks down the aisle.  I like this tradition and think it makes that moment when the groom sees the bride start down the aisle even more special.  However, this really is a personal decision.  If you’d like to take the groom dress shopping with you it can be a great experience as well.

Is it ok to have three wedding dresses? One for ceremony, one for reception and one for after the cake cutting to dance? Or is it a real waste of money?

The sky is the limit on what you can plan for your special day.  If fashion is important to you and your budget allows for three dresses, I think you should go for it. Remember that you likely won’t wear your dress or dresses again so if you’re comfortable with the cost for one wear than purchase away.  The most important thing is that you feel beautiful on your wedding day.
Top 5: Picking your wedding dress tips
  • Determine your wedding dress budget before you start shopping.  Decide if that budget includes accessories as well (shoes, jewelry, veil, clutch, etc.) and plan accordingly.
  • Know your body shape and be open to trying on multiple styles.  You may fall in love with one style in photographs but find out that it doesn’t work well with your body type.  Being open to different silhouettes will allow you to find the dress that flatters your body and makes you feel beautiful.
  • Allow plenty of time for your dress to be ordered and altered.  I recommend starting your dress shopping eight months to a year in advance if possible.  If the order comes in wrong you will have time for a new dress to be made.
  • Keep your wedding dress shopping party to four or less.  Too many opinions will cloud your judgment and make your experience less relaxing.
  • Make sure you can move in your dress.  You want to look amazing but still be able to enjoy your wedding day.  If you can’t move, you won’t be able to dance.

What are some fall wedding ideas?

In autumn, the weather starts to get cooler and the leaves change colors.  It’s a beautiful time of year to get married.  Try incorporating some fall touches into your wedding.  Greet guests with hot apple cider as they arrive to the ceremony location or setup a warm beverage bar at the cocktail hour.  Roll up pashmina scarves and display them in a basket for guest to enjoy during an outdoor ceremony or reception for those chilly fall days.  Embrace the colors of fall and add natural details into your décor such as leaf prints and twigs.  Add branches to your centerpieces for a warm and dramatic effect.

What are some fall wedding colors?

Embrace the cozy feeling of fall and all of the beauty of nature with your wedding colors.  Fall is a great time to use tones of red, orange, and yellow as they reflect the colors of the changing leaves.  Chocolate browns and greens are great accent colors taken right from nature.  Ivory and warm greys embody that feeling of warmth that autumn encourages.  Warm color and neutrals are great colors for fall.

  • Start your planning out right by choosing a wedding venue that captures your personal style.  If you live your life boldly with beautiful details and grand plans choose a traditional venue with dramatic proportions and details.  If you enjoy warmth and natural elements find a more cozy and rustic venue.

  • Try creating hand-drawn save the date cards, menus or programs to give a personal touch to your wedding day.  Guests love these personal details.

  • Choose your wedding attire to reflect your personal style.  Make a statement with a pale blue dress or an interesting cut.  If you love things to be uniform, have your bridal party dress alike.  If you like to mix things up have them choose their own attire based on criteria you give them such as color and length. Show your personal style with jewelry and accessories.

  • Have your favorite band play at your reception or create a personalized mix for dancing.  Have your guests fall in love with your musical style.

  • Create a wedding favor to include your favorite things like your favorite wine or spice mix, include a music mix and a book you love.

What are the best ideas for saving money on your wedding day?

The best ways to save money on your wedding day are limit your guest list to family and close friends. Food and beverage is usually the largest budget item and is priced per guest.  A smaller guest list will also mean fewer tables so the linen rentals and floral cost will decrease as well.  Consider having a cocktail style reception instead of a seated dinner.  Offer your guests, wine, beer and one or two specialty cocktails instead of having a full bar.  This will cut down on alcohol costs.  Consider having your wedding on a Friday evening or a Sunday afternoon and choose a date in November through April.  Venues charge higher rental fees and catering fees on Saturdays in peak wedding season (May through October).

Splurge, Splurge! What should be the biggest wedding day splurge?

Each couple should determine which aspects of their wedding matter most to them.  When creating the budget breakdown, allocate some additional funds to the areas you’ve decided are most important.  These areas are going to be different for each couple.  Some couples are really passionate about food and should allocate extra funds to the catering or special delectable treats.  Others have a clear picture of the ambiance in their minds and will want to increase the floral or lighting budget.  Still others have a passion for music and would like to hire a high end band for the reception.  The couple’s style and interests will often guide them to areas of the budget they should increase.

Breakdown the wedding budget, who pays for the wedding day expenses?

Traditionally the bride’s parents pay for the wedding and reception and the groom’s parents pay for the rehearsal dinner.  I think it’s a good idea to have the couple sit down with their families and discuss who will help out financially.  Not everyone can afford to pay for a wedding and there’s nothing wrong with the couple or other family members helping out on paying expenses on the wedding day.  You should always go into the planning process with a clear idea of the wedding budget and who will pay for what.
